Why on earth would you raffle off a painting?

A couple months ago I raffled off a similar painting from my Paris cityscape series. I had never done this before and after a few false starts it really took off with a life all its own. I have had a few experiences in the past using platforms like Kickstarter to fund a specific project but a raffle was new territory for me. Similar to what I appreciated about using  Kickstarter, I observed a gathering of excitement in my community around what became to feel like a very special event.

The painting itself is an event so when you decide to create a raffle around a specific painting you in a very real way double up that event because you know have another experience you can invite your friends into. It is similar to when you host an  exhibition of artworks which is another way  to create context around a piece of artwork. What I am enjoying with this new raffle platform (that has come out of the UK) is it is pandemic proof because it happens on line so it cannot be cancelled with a lockdown.
